Episcopal Refugee Network
San Diego hosts almost 3500 Sudanese refugees, mainly from the Dinka, Nuer, Bari and Equatorial tribal areas of the Sudan.
The Network supports refugees as they arrive under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR), the U.S. Department of State and the receiving agencies.
The Network helps refugees in acquiring foodstamps and social security cards, enrolling in school and medical programs, obtaining driver's licenses, learning English and more. Important parts of the program are the provision of household goods and furniture to arriving families.
The Refugee Network also helps families who have been displaced by genocide in Burma and Bhutan. Some of the services provided are:
- tutoring for school age children
- clothing
- furniture
- medical appointment translation
- applying for government assistance
The Refugee Network tutors children on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:00 to 5:00 pm at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Tutors with educational backgrounds are needed, as are funds to pay staff members of this program.
