House of Bishops Report

From the Diocese of LA's The News:

Bishops depose Schofield of San Joaquin
House also hears that Robinson won't attend Lambeth; works on reconciliation; deplores waterboarding
John-David Schofield     The House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church, meeting at Camp Allen in Texas, has taken formal action to depose John-David Schofield (pictured at right) as bishop of the Diocese of San Joaquin in response to Schofield's actions in leading his diocese to separate from the Episcopal Church and align with the Dicoese of the Southern Cone, based in South America.
The House also deposed William Jackson Cox, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Maryland, resigned, who had also aligned himself with a jurisdiction outside the Episcopal Church.
The House heard a report that efforts to include Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire in this summer's Lambeth Conference had been unsuccessful. Robinson, who intends to be present unofficially during the once-a-decade meeting, expressed his disappointment, but insisted that his brother and sister bishops from The Episcopal Church must attend and "be at the table" at the conference.
In other business, the bishops passed a resolution expressing support for a bill recently passed by Congress and vetoed by President George Bush that would outlaw the practice of "waterboarding" as a form of torture. The bishops urged Congess to override the president's veto.
In the days of retreat that preceded the bishops' business meeting March 12, they attended training sessions on faith-based reconciliation led by the Rev. Canon Brian Cox, rector of Christ the King Church in Santa Barbara, and the Hon. Joanne O'Donnell, a Superior Court judge and member of St. James' Church, Los Angeles, co-founders of reconcilers.net. Cox was recently appointed by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori to assist with reconciliation work in the Diocese of San Joaquin as it begins to re-form after the decision by its more conservative members to align with the Southern Cone.
