Letter to Clergy

Bishop James Mathes
Letter to Clergy
Saturday, April 2, 2005

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As the world begins the time of morning for Pope John Paul II, I think it is most appropriate that we remember the Pope in our prayers, particularly at the Eucharist throughout the week and on Sunday. For people across denominations and faiths he was an inspirational leader who called us to a closer relationship with God through Jesus Christ and to respect the dignity of all human beings. We give thanks to God for his witness and ministry as we grieve his passing. On behalf of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, I have extended my condolences to Bishop Brom.

I have also learned today that the Rt. Rev. Stephen Plummer, Bishop of the Navajoland died on Saturday after a long battle with cancer. Bishop Plummer was the first Navajo bishop. He will be greatly missed in a place where the church is called to bring justice to the oppressed. I ask that you remember Bishop Plummer and his family and the people of Navajoland in your prayers.

For your information, I have attached three press releases. I look forward to being with you next Tuesday, April 12th at St. Dunstan's for Clericus. In the meantime, grace, peace and blessings.

+Jim
